Website design for restaurants

Restaurant website design: hours, menu and a table, fast

A restaurant site is opened on a phone, in a car or on a sofa, by someone deciding where to eat in the next hour. They want the hours, the menu and the address, in that order. We build restaurant websites that give them all three before they scroll, and that make the food look as good as it tastes.

What we put first

What your customers look for

  • Open now, and until when

Today’s hours at the top of the page, with the kitchen’s last-order time if it differs. Holiday hours are changed by you in a minute.

  • The menu as a web page

Not a PDF and not a photo of a board. A real page with photos, prices and allergens that a phone can read, a screen reader can read and a search engine can index.

  • Order, reserve, directions

Three buttons that go where they should: your ordering service, your reservation system or phone, and a map with parking spelled out.

  • Events and specials that expire

Trivia night, a tap takeover, a game-day special. Each has a date and comes down on its own, so last month’s event is never on the home page.

Design concept

How it could look

A home page concept drawn for a made-up business, on a desktop and on a phone. We draw one like it from your own site, free, when you ask for a checkup.

Website design concept board for the fictional Ember & Rye Kitchen: a dark desktop home page and a phone view with a chef plating a dish by a wood fire, the headline "Wood-fired. Made to share.", and four menu photo cards.
Design concept for Ember & Rye Kitchen, a business we made up. The name, phone number and details are invented.
  • Food photography leads; the menu is one tap from the top
  • Reserve a Table and View Menu are the two main buttons
  • Dishes are shown by course, in photos, straight under the first screen
  • The phone view keeps the photo first and the buttons within reach

What you get

A typical site for restaurants

  • Home, with today’s hours, menu and ordering buttons
  • Menu, as a web page with photos and allergens
  • Locations and hours, one page per location
  • Events and private dining
  • About: the story, the people in the kitchen
  • Contact, catering and gift cards

Every site is built and tested to WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the accessibility standard we hold government websites to, and comes with hosting, backups and changes by email or text.

Questions

What owners ask us

Can we change the menu ourselves?

Yes. Prices and items are edited in a simple list. If you would rather not, text us a photo of the new menu and we will update it.

Do you connect to our ordering and reservation services?

Yes. We link the buttons to the services you already use, so orders and bookings keep going where your staff expect them.

We have more than one location. How does that work?

Each location has its own page with its own address, hours, phone and menu differences, which is also what map listings need.

Send us your web address. We measure your site on a phone and email you a redesigned home page with the price. Free, no obligation.
