Valor MMO · Technology

The technology behind Valor

Valor is a game, a desktop application, a set of servers and a website, and each part uses the tool that suits it. This is what we chose and what we use it for. None of it is exotic: it is the same well-tested, widely used software we would choose for a client.

01 / The game

The game

The client players run and the servers they connect to.

  • Unreal Engine 5

The game engine. Rendering, animation, physics and networking for the client on Windows and Linux and for the dedicated server.

  • C++

The game’s own code: combat, quests, crafting, housing, the interface and the rules the server enforces.

  • Linux

The dedicated game servers and the account service run on Linux as ordinary system services.

  • SQLite

Where the server keeps each player’s character, bag, house and progress.

02 / The launcher

The launcher

The Windows application that installs, updates and starts the game.

  • .NET 8

The Windows launcher is a .NET desktop application, published as one self-contained program so players install nothing else.

  • Inno Setup

Builds the Windows installer for the launcher.

  • Code signing

The installer and the launcher are signed, so Windows shows who published them.

03 / The website

The website

valormmo.com and everything that serves it.

  • HTML and CSS

Every page is a plain static file, generated ahead of time. Nothing is assembled when a visitor arrives, which is why the site is fast.

  • JavaScript

Small scripts for the parts that are live: server status, the player directory, account pages and the support form.

  • Python

The generators that build the guides and tables from the game’s data, the translation tooling, and the release checks.

  • Caddy

The web server, with automatic HTTPS.

  • Cloudflare

The network in front of the site and the game downloads, so a large download is fast wherever the player lives.

  • Node.js

Runs the automated tests that load real pages in a browser before each release.

04 / Languages, community and releases

Languages, community and releases

The services around the game.

  • Google Cloud Translation

The first draft of each translation, which is then checked and corrected on screen.

  • Discord

The community server, linked from the launcher and the website.

  • GitHub

Source control, code review and the queue that tests every change before it joins a release.

More of the project

The rest of Valor

  • The game

A shared medieval world: a town, keeps to fight through, the sea, and tavern games.

  • The launcher

A Windows application we wrote to install, update and start the game.

  • The character creator

Six clear steps from a blank slate to a named character, with a live 3D preview.

  • Interface design

The title screen, character windows, conversations and mini-game screens.

  • The website

valormmo.com: guides, patch notes, accounts and a live server status.

  • Fifteen languages

The game, the launcher and the website, translated and checked, including Arabic.
